Best known for the eponymous pocket-pistol that killed Lincoln, Deringer also made a series of rifles for the federal government (1814 through the early 1840s), of which this is the earliest known. This is the ONLY survivor of 51 of its type, all delivered in 1814, before Deringer was forced to conform to the new Wickham pattern with iron mounts and oval patch-box. Moreover, this is the ONLY US military Deringer rifle of Pennsylvania / “Kentucky” style!The only known example of 51 rifles delivered in anticipation of his first (1814) contract and thus the FIRST Deringer US military rifle. 100% original with the possible exception of the ramrod.0.56 caliber, land-to-groove.
