Revolutionary War to War of 1812 Cutlass. American, possibly British. Classic figure-8 wrought iron guard.
Likely American.Classic “Figure-8” (double disc) guard is typical of Anglo-American cutlasses of the period. See Gilkerson’s Boarders Away. All hand wrought iron/steel.American origin and use are suggested by total lack of markings and the inboard guard, which was once bent down to reduce chaffing when worn in the belt.It is now bent back to its original position, but the crease remains in the iron. That alteration would not have been tolerated on a British man-o-war.Blade considerably reduced by repeated sharpening.
