Large powder horn with brass tacks and Micmac Indian designs

PRICE: $4,500.00

Description:

Similar to Cat. No. 32 (last page) in Stephen V. Grancsay, 1965, American Engraved Powder Horns.  Single brass eye-screw for carrying.  A later hand records what seems to be a name and a date “75 WM. MOON” but it is hard to decipher.  If a date, it would be 1875, although horn could be a bit later.  Large convex plugs like this one are typical of horns made in the Maritime Provinces, and this horn was acquired in Nova Scotia.  Remains of darkened gold paint on butt suggest display or ceremonial use.  Base was probably round, as grown on the bovine, but due to its very large diameter, it has been steamed and pressed oval to lie closer to the body when carried.  12 ½ inches overall chord length.
